Anatomy of a Lamp

Parts of a Lamp

Finial

The finial is the decorative accent at the top of the lamp, also used to secure the lampshade onto the harp. Finials come in a wide range of styles and colors and are often considered the “jewelry” of the lamp.

Lampshade Frame

The lampshade frame is the structural support for the lampshade. Frames are available in a variety of shapes and styles. Learn all about lampshades here!

Harp

Harps are flexible, often U-shaped parts that fit over a lamp’s socket and light bulb, simultaneously protecting the bulb and providing the support or attachment piece for the lampshade. Learn how to choose the right size for your lamp!

Socket

Standard light bulbs and sockets (E26) exist in both single and double (aka the “three-way socket /bulb) contacts. Make sure to match your bulb with the correct socket type to avoid any electrical failures. Learn more about socket safety here.

Switch

The switch is how you activate the lightbulb. Many lamps feature three-way switches to control the brightness of the bulb, so make sure you use the correct lightbulb with your switch.

Harp Saddle

The harp saddle is the u-shaped metal wire attachment that is mounted below the socket and into which the harp fits.

Neck

A lamp’s “neck” is the piece which separates the body from the socket. Necks can be rigid or a flexible “gooseneck” which allows for adjustment.

Lamp Rod

The lamp rod is the metal tube through which the electrical wiring runs from the socket to the cord. It can also provide structural support.

Base

The base of the lamp is the part that supports the shade and neck. It often houses the light’s electrical components as well. The base should be sturdy enough to support the rest of the lamp, and it should complement both the function and design of the lamp.

Cord

The cord is what you plug into the wall socket for power. If you are using a lamp built outside the US, you may have to convert the cord and socket to be compatible with American voltage. Click here to learn about our lamp repair/conversion services.
