Providing a good and lasting “first impression” to your guests as they walk into your home is most always our objective as host and homeowner. One of the ways to accomplish your objective is through the thoughtful selection of your entry way or foyer lighting fixtures.
When you walk through your front door, you want to experience a feeling of warmth, welcome and comfort…. You are home now and happy to be so! With the right amount of light, you can create this feeling every time you, or someone enters the home, and one of the keys to that is layering your lighting.
Many foyers have high ceilings, requiring the luminance of a larger lighting fixture. A chandelier maybe a great option here; filling the space and providing adequate light.
If chandeliers are too “decadent” for your taste, opt for an oversized pendant. Remember, the type of fixture you choose should mesh well with the overall design of your home.
After the “anchor” light has been established, you can think about the other layers. An accent lamp on the foyer table will provide a nice diffused light and it’s also a good safety light to leave on at night when you’re away so you can arrive home and not be in the dark.
Wall scones are also brilliant in the entry way and another option to provide that “safety” lighting. These fixtures can be placed above a foyer table on either side of a mirror to cast a welcoming light when you walk in. If you have a staircase, wall sconces are also perfect to light the way up the stairs. As a rule of thumb, fixtures should be placed every third step.
Overall, each fixture’s luminance and lighting direction should complement each other to produce a warm, inviting feeling when you walk through the doors. Your entry way will set the mood and essence for the rest of your home
